The Lilac Crown Amazon is a favourite among many, and it's not surprising. This parrot has an amazing disposition and is quite lovely to behold. In addition, they are also intelligent companions that will provide owners with many years of companionship & happiness.

Best known for their even-tempered disposition, Lilac Crown Amazons are a favourite among parrot enthusiasts. There are two commonly recognized species of Lilac Crown Amazon - the standard Lilac Crown Amazon, also called 'Finsch's Amazon' (Amazona Finschi Finschi), and the Sonora Lilac Crowned Amazon (Amazona Finschi Woodi). The first species will be discussed here. The Lilac Crown Amazon may not be as well known for talking as other Amazons, such as the Double Yellow Headed Amazon or Blue Fronts, but most owners will tell you they are good talker. Some owners even claim that not only do their Lilac Crowns talk, but they sing, and incredibly well at that!!! There are of course never any guarantees about talking ability. Even if your Lilac Crown Amazon never utters a word he/she would still be a wonderful pet. They are known to do very well in homes with families. If they are socialized well from an early age, they tend to get along well with all family members; this is often not the case with many other species of Amazons. Lilac Crowns display a very even temperament that stays throughout adulthood. Some other breeds of Amazon become very aggressive as they reach sexual maturity. Lilacs may display a little moodiness during sexual maturity, but in most cases, it passes very quickly. Their even temperament makes them a great choice in family households.

Just like most other parrots, Lilac Crowns can be noisy. If you want a quiet companion, then the Lilac Crown Amazon is not the pet for you. Lilac Crowns take great pleasure in making jungle noises and should never be forbidden to do so. Having said this, it's usually a morning call and evening call as they would do in the wild. Another love of the Lilac Crown Amazon is chewing, so you should always have an ample supply of toys in their cages & play areas for them to chew on.

The average lifespan of a Lilac Crown Amazon is between 40 and 60 years, depending of course on care and diet. Lilac Crown Amazons are slightly smaller than their cousin, the Sonora Lilac Crowned Amazon. Averaging a mature size of 13 inches (33cm) in length, Lilac Crowns are of medium size compared to other Amazons. Their wingspan ranges from seven to eight inches (185-208mm) and like most amazons, the primary colour of a Lilac Crown is green. Their body is accented in many colours with greenish yellow feathers that can be seen edging the front of the crown, abdomen, ear coverlets, chest, and cheeks. The lores, forehead, and the front of the crown are a reddish brown or maroon color, while pale lilac is seen on the nape and sides of the neck. The wings and tail feathers are quite stunning. The secondary feathers of the wings are a striking violet blue, with red-wing speculum seen on the first five feathers. Their tail is green with yellow tips, featuring blue feathers towards the outside of the tail. The colours of Lilac Crown Amazons become more vibrant with maturity. Their feet are grey, beak yellowish, and their eyes possess a beautiful orange iris.

Lilac Crown Amazons originate from Mexico. They are commonly seen in southwestern Mexico as well as in central western Mexico. They are also named the Finsch's Amazon, after the person who initially distinguished it as a breed distinct from the Blue Fronted Amazon. They bear many strong resemblances to other parrot species such as the Mexican Red Head & Green Cheeked Amazon, however, upon closer inspection several distinct differences are revealed.

Lilac Crowns LOVE to chew so, having said this, you must provide them with plenty of toys for chewing purpose only. Like other parrots, these are intelligent creatures and can become bored easily if they are left alone. For this reason, it is often recommended to leave a radio or tv on for them when you're out. Because of their intelligence, it is not unusual for a Lilac Crown to escape from its cage; make sure that you parrot proof the cage so that yours does not become an adept HOUDINI!
