The Timneh African Grey is the perfect mix of intelligence and beauty.

There are two types of African Grey Parrots, Congo and Timneh. Congo African Grey parrots are larger, measuring 12 to 14 inches. It is grey in colour with a black beak and red tail. Timneh African Grey Parrots are smaller, measuring 10 inches with a darker grey colour, brownish-to-maroon coloured tail and a pinkish or horned coloured upper mandible. Timneh African Greys and Congo African Grey have the same disposition and are only different by colour and size.

African Grey's by far having the most astonishing ability for speech. Most do not start talking until a year in age, but some will speak earlier, and some will take a little longer…so never give up hope! Once they start look out as some have been known to have a vocabulary of over 2000 words. Of course there is no guarantee your pet African Grey will talk, but that is rare and of course speech should never be the sole reason for buying an African Grey. Oh, one last point about speech, they can mimic almost any sound in your home.

Greys are cautious birds. They tend to size up a giving situation and may not be very outgoing towards strangers. You'll have your best friend for life, once you win the trust of an African Grey. They are very dedicated and loyal birds.

Timneh's have a non-destructive behavior and sweet sociable personalities and enjoy spending plenty of time out of their cages. Minimum cage requirements would be 24 x 24 x 36, however the bigger the better. The bar spacing should be 3/4 to 1 inch. At least part of the cage should have horizontally oriented bars to allow the parrot to climb on the sides of the cage. You want your parrot to be socialized with your entire family, so place the cage in a part of the house where the bird will have lots of contact. To avoid overheating keep the cage away from direct sunlight and to avoid drafts, don't place the cage near vents or air conditioning ducts.

Perches are an essential necessity in the cage. It is important to vary the thickness of perch sizes and provide different textures. Your pet birds do get tired standing day after day on a perch of the same size and made of the same material. After all they do spend almost all of their lives standing, so keeping their feet clean and healthy is important. Smooth, slippery perches should not be used, neither should sandpaper covered perches.

Many parrots spend a great deal of time on a play gym, and this is an excellent way to provide for your pet while still allowing it freedom from its cage and the ability to interact with you and your family.

Provide a good selection of toys. Having a good selection of toys on hand and rotating them through the cage a few at a time will help to provide entertainment and stimulation.

A Timneh should be given a wide variety of food, ranging from pellets and seed mixes to fresh fruits and vegetables. Your bird will certainly let you know his preferences, however you will need to know when your parrot is continuously eating the wrong foods, and you know…junk food. A Timneh will gorge on Sunflower seeds and disregard of more nutritious offerings. Sunflower seeds are high in fat and should be provided in limited quantities. They do need extra calcium, as they are unable to store it in their bones. Foods rich in calcium include almonds, kale, figs, beans, and broccoli.

Most African Grey parrots love to bathe and/or shower. Some Grey owners bring their pets into the shower, while others prefer they bathe and/or shower on their own. You have several options available if you're not into showering with your birds. Large basins with lukewarm water works well, or use a spray bottle with warm water and lightly spray your birds. It is important to ensure your parrots have a warm, draft-free location to preen until the feathers are completely dry. You should never bathe/shower your parrots just before bedtime.
